Applewood West

Applewood West began as Applewood Mesa Ranchettes, laid out by the Bunger brothers on an 80-acre apple orchard bought in 1933 and opened for construction in 1956 with 600 half-acre home sites. The hillside lots on the north slope of South Table Mountain drew custom mid-century modern homes, including platform houses that builder Bud Kentz and architect Joseph Krabacher set on concrete-and-steel supports to reach slopes that were otherwise unbuildable, while the flatter ground filled with long ranches on semi-rural lots. The neighborhood is framed by I-70 to the east, the mountain's trails to the south, the Club at Rolling Hills to the west, and Applewood Golf Course to the north, an 18-hole, par-71 J. Press Maxwell design that opened in 1961. Addresses here are Golden, not Arvada, and the I-70 ramps at Youngfield Street are about 3 minutes away, with US-6 5 minutes beyond.
