Mission Viejo opened on September 24, 1972 with nine model homes, and the Mission Viejo Company built most of the roughly one-square-mile subdivision between Hampden Ave, Quincy Ave, Chambers Rd and Buckley Rd through the 1970s. Five house series (Granada, La Paz, Smokey Ridge, Summit and Willowood) plus the Seville, Valencia and Cherry Glen townhomes stand behind adobe-brick Barcelona entrance walls, under Mission Bell streetlights and along Spanish street names. The 21-acre Mission Viejo Park anchors the center, joined by La Parquita and Los Ninos parks, the West Toll Gate Creek Regional Trail, a recreation center and the Aurora Public Library branch at 15324 East Hampden Circle. Mission Viejo Elementary sits on South Alicia Parkway inside the subdivision, and Parker Rd is about 5 minutes west.
